One of the staples of Internet marketing these days is Amazon. They are a vast department store selling millions of products and every single one of them offers you and me the opportunity to make money.

Amazon's affiliate program can truly be a license to print money but - and there is always a but - finding the right products to promote can be a difficult business, even for seasoned affiliate marketing experts.

You see, not all Amazon products are created equal.

There are many courses, videos and ebooks that teach how to make money from Amazon. Many of them are very good and give a lot of detail on how to pick winning products to promote. However, almost all of them - the honest ones at least - stress that selecting the products you will promote is a task that you must spend time and effort on.

Not Difficult - Just Time Consuming and Boring...

It isn't that finding the golden nuggets that are hiding in plain sight in Amazon's marketplace is particularly difficult - it is just that Amazon don't make it particularly easy. Some of the information we need is easily accessed, but other vital data is hidden away, requiring you to delve deeply. Very deeply.

It can easily take 45 minutes or an hour to find just one 'golden' product in just one of Amazon's departments. But even after all that work you have the nagging question that maybe there was a better one in a department you hadn't picked!

Up until now the only way to find out was to put in the long tedious hours of hard, brain-numbing and eye-straining work.

As a successful Amazon affiliate I have spent far too long trawling their marketplace looking for treasure, and even with years of experience have often come up empty. It is a part of being an Amazon affiliate, but not a part that I enjoy or care to waste any more time on than absolutely necessary.

But then inspiration struck. It suddenly dawned on me that I could write a computer program to do a huge amount of the work for me.

So I set to it and wrote a script that applied my own personal formula for finding hot products to promote. It analyses literally thousands upon thousands of products on Amazon - in 23 different departments - and measures them against the checklist that I, and many other Amazon super affiliates use.

The product price must be $150 or more. With commission levels of between 4% and 8% we need our 'lead' products to offer a healthy return for our efforts.
The discount that Amazon are offering compared to the product's original list price should be at least 25%. This, in my view, is important because our websites have to have a clear reason for people to click on our affiliate link. A demonstrably good price is one clear way of signaling that.
The selected product must be high on Amazon's 'popularity' listing. Current popularity means that there is a real - and hopefully large - interest. In the end we will need to get traffic from search engines and a high popularity product is one indicator that our job will be easier.
The Amazon star rating should be 4.5 or more. That's easier said than done because Amazon do not make that information easy to find. They show a graphic, but hide the actual star rating deep in the code of their site. In my view this is one of the most vital pieces of the puzzle, but very few affiliates can make use of it.
The number of reviews that customers have written. I generally dismiss products that have fewer than ten reviews because we need to read what others have to say to be able to write effective content for our own affiliate pages.

Finding, and assessing all that for just one product is hard enough, but Amazon have millions! That's why I liken it to mining for gold. You have to sift through tons of useless rock to find those elusive - and incredibly valuable - golden nuggets.

Now in all honesty I have to admit that Amazon sometimes makes mistakes and there are occasionally products that crop up on the Bargain Basement list that shouldn't be there - for example, in current list there is a pack of 4 Duracell batteries for which Amazon show a list price of $773.95 and a discount of 98.7%! (It is product number B000K2NW08 if you feel like looking it up). No program can eliminate such errors but the many real bargains that it finds more than make up for the few bloopers.
